What a Statement of Purpose is — and what admissions teams actually read it for

In the context of applying to graduate schools or universities, a statement of purpose (SOP) is an essay that explains who you are, what you intend to study, and why this programme is the right place to do it. It is often the only part of the application written in your own voice — which is exactly why it carries so much weight.

What it is not

It is not a CV in paragraphs, and it is not a list of achievements. Admissions readers already have your transcript. The SOP is where they learn whether you can think about your own field.

The three questions every SOP must answer

Why this subject? Why this university and this specific programme? And what will you do with it afterwards? A strong SOP answers all three with specifics — a named professor, a particular module, a concrete career step — rather than with enthusiasm.

Why students get help writing one

Not because they cannot write, but because it is very hard to see your own story from the outside. A good SOP mentor asks the questions an admissions officer would ask, and keeps asking until the answers stop being generic.
