Preparing for the IELTS exam can be a game-changer in your journey toward academic, professional or migration goals. These six habits separate a 6.0 from a 7.5 far more reliably than extra hours of study.
1. Learn the band descriptors before you learn anything else
Examiners mark against a published rubric. Read it. Most candidates lose Writing marks on Task Achievement and Coherence — criteria they never knew existed.
2. Time every practice task
Untimed practice teaches you to write well slowly. The exam does not reward that. From your first week, every Reading passage gets twenty minutes and every essay gets forty.
3. Speak English out loud every day
Fluency is a physical skill. Two minutes of describing your day aloud, daily, does more for Speaking Part 2 than an hour of silent vocabulary lists.
4. Read the question twice, then answer it
A brilliant essay on the wrong question scores a 5. Underline the task words before you plan.
5. Transfer Listening answers carefully
Spelling and plurals are marked. A correct answer written as "enviroment" is wrong.
6. Take a full mock under exam conditions
Not at home with tea. In a room, on the clock, all four modules in one sitting. Your mock band is your real band — everything else is optimism.
